Background
Waslala
is a Nicaraguan municipality of approximately 40,000 people. The central
town is home to about 10,000 people and 30,000 inhabitants live in the
95 mountainous rural communities surrounding the town. Waslala and the
surrounding areas are lush with vegetation, have beautiful rivers and
streams and offer breathtaking views of the tropical forests and countryside.
Getting to Waslala
It
takes approximately 7 hours to reach Waslala by bus or truck. The road
to Nicaragua is not maintained and is not always paved. It takes 4 hours
to reach Matagalpa – a large mountainous community; it takes another
5 hours to reach the main village of Waslala. This trip would take approximately
2 hours if the roads were paved and maintained. Once in Waslala, the main
forms of transportation are on foot or by horse. The outlying communities
in Waslala are as close as one hour by foot to as far as 10 hours by foot.
